Tasmanian Reuse Impact Study

The Tasmanian Reuse Impact Study assessed the level of significance of the reuse and repair sector to Tasmania's economy and social framework.

The study highlighted the very significant contribution the sector makes to the economy, social inclusion, cost of living relief, reducing landfilling, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Reusing and repairing products and materials has long been an important part of Tasmania’s island ethos, and the joint project with Charitable Reuse Australia, and consultants Rawtec, has been able to quantify many aspects of the benefits to Tasmania.

The study has developed an online calculator to help businesses and organisations to assess the value of their own reuse activities. The calculator provides estimates of the amount of material diverted from landfill, the economic benefits generated, the cost of living and other social benefits achieved, and the amount of avoided greenhouse gas emissions.

Tasmania is the second Australian State Government to fund a Reuse Data Study, which will be conducted in line with Monash University’s National Reuse Measurement Guidelines and harmonised in scope with the successful NSW Reuse Data Study competed in June 2024.
