Release of Strategic Resource Recovery Reviews

The Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Board has released two significant new reports that provide fresh insights into industrial waste in Northern Tasmania and organic waste generated by the hospitality and tourism sectors.

These strategic analyses play a key role in shaping the development of the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy. Their findings will help identify priority materials, emerging challenges and opportunities for targeted action across the State.

Industrial Waste in Northern Tasmania

Understanding the scale, type and nature of industrial waste in the northern region of Tasmania is critical to identifying and addressing the regions unique challenges. As a small jurisdiction, Tasmania faces unique barriers such as limited economies of scale.

Overcoming these requires:

(i) strong cross sector collaboration,

(ii) leadership and strategic partnerships; and

(iii) innovation tailored to Tasmania’s size and needs.

The insights from this report equip the Board to consider specific projects that can be prioritised in the short term, and plan for longer term engagement and partnerships that address issues in a collaborative and coordinated manner.

Organic Waste from Hospitality and Tourism

Organic waste remains a major issue for the hospitality and tourism sectors. The Board partnered with Hospitality Tasmania (HT, formerly THA) and the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania (TICT) to examine the issue in detail, generating invaluable insights into current practices, issues and opportunities

This collaboration work demonstrates the value of the Board’s Peak Body Partnership Program, which supports industry led solutions.

A Shared Responsibility

Reducing waste to landfill and increasing the circularity of materials depends on the commitment of industry, government and the wider community. The Board welcome engagement from stakeholders who are ready to collaborate, innovate and invest in solutions that reduce waste generation, boost resource recovery and make Tasmania a state where nothing is wasted.
