Tasmanian Charity Reuse and Repair Data Study

The Tasmania Waste and Resource Recovery Board (WRRB), in partnership with Charitable Reuse Australia (CRA), is conducting a survey of Tasmanian reuse organisations. The survey will gather data on reuse activity, economic value, associated employment, social impacts, and the repair of second-hand items prior to sale.

This data will show how reuse can help governments achieve targets more effectively and close policy gaps by incorporating reuse and repair initiatives.

The joint project with Charitable Reuse Australia will for the first time provide a strong evidence base as to just how significant the reuse and associated repair industry is in Tasmania. Driving products and material use up the waste hierarchy to a higher value use is an important policy outcome, as highlighted in the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2023-26

The Board is hoping that all Tasmanian op shops, tip shops and reuse shops will get involved with the study. The greater the engagement with these businesses and organisations, the better the understanding will be across the State. This will then help the Board to provide the most effective forms of support and encouragement to this critical part of the Tasmanian community and economy.
