Launch of Tasmanian Reuse Impact Study

The findings of a study into the value and impact of the reuse and repair sector in Tasmania was launched on 24 March 2025. The study also includes the release of a new online calculator to assess the benefits of reusing rather than landfilling items and materials.
The joint project between the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Board (the Board) and Charitable Reuse Australia gathered information from Tasmanian op shops, tip shops and reuse shops to better understand reuse activity, and the economic value, associated employment, social impacts, and the extent of repairing second-hand items prior to sale.
The study highlighted the significant value to the Tasmanian economy, and to individual Tasmanians, of the reuse sector.
Repairing and reusing products and material has a higher value in the waste hierarchy, and is an important outcome highlighted in the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2023-2026.
The study will help the Board to determine the most effective forms of support to and encouragement with this critical part of the Tasmanian community and economy.
The study also developed a valuable online calculator to allow organisations and businesses to assess the impact of their reuse activities. It can calculate the amount of landfilling that has been avoided, as well as the greenhouse gas, water and energy savings that can be achieved.
