Illegal dumping and littering can create significant clean-up and disposal costs for public authorities.

The Public Authority Rebate Program is being delivered as a trial program for local and state public authorities and supports the management of illegally dumped waste and litter across Tasmania. It provides a 100% rebate on landfill levy costs incurred when disposing of illegally dumped and littered material collected by public authorities, in accordance with the Ministerial Direction of July 2022.

The program commenced on 1 January 2024 and applies to eligible costs incurred from 1 July 2023. The trial has been extended until 31 December 2026 and will be reviewed in early 2027.

Eligible claims include waste disposed to landfill from:

  • Collections of dumped material from bushland or waterways.

  • Community clean-up activities (where public authorities were responsible for disposal).

  • Stormwater trap cleaning.

  • Street-sweeping operations.
